How to Find the Right Investor for Your Startup Stage
Not all investors are created equal. Matching your startup's stage and sector to the right type of investor can make or break your fundraising round.
Finding the Right Investor Match
One of the biggest mistakes founders make is treating all investors as interchangeable. A Series B growth equity firm has almost nothing in common with a pre-seed angel investor β yet founders often pitch both with the same deck.
Understand Investor Types
Angel Investors: Best for pre-seed and seed stages. They write personal checks ($10Kβ$250K), move fast, and often add value through industry connections.
Micro VCs: Funds under $100M. Perfect for seed rounds. They typically lead rounds and take board seats.
Institutional VCs: The big firms (a16z, Sequoia, Accel). They write $1M+ checks, usually at Series A or later. They expect strong traction and a large TAM.
Corporate VCs: Strategic arms of large companies (Google Ventures, Salesforce Ventures). Great if their parent company is a potential customer or acquirer.
