The conversation in AI has moved from copilots to agents — and a gold rush of vertical AI startups is racing to capitalize.
Where the first wave of generative AI products answered questions and drafted text, the current wave is building systems that take action: AI agents that research a customer, draft a proposal, book a meeting, file a report, or reconcile an invoice end to end. The difference is not semantic. Agents that complete real workflows can be priced on outcomes rather than seats, unlocking fundamentally larger and stickier revenue.
The most promising startups are going deep in specific verticals — legal research, healthcare prior authorization, back-office finance, and field service operations — where workflows are well-documented, data is abundant, and the cost of human labor is high. These companies are not selling a tool; they are selling completed work, and their unit economics increasingly justify it.
